INSTRUCTIONS
We wanted a coffin for our haunt in 2007; however, I did not have time to make a sturdy wood coffin. When I found 3 heavy duty boxes at work all the same size and height, I decided this would be a great fun project to do with my son. He had a blast painting and decorating the coffin.
Parents Part
I lined the boxes up back to back and cut out center areas not needed. We decided we wanted it to appear as a toe-pincher so I cut, shaped and taped the card board together (as seen in below pics). I added 3″ strips of card board at each inner seam and taped for added strength. Once everything was taped, I spray painted the outside with black spray paint. I bought four foam skull and cross bone appliques at the Dollar Store and glued them on the sides (with my hot glue gun).
Kids Part
After I set-up the acrylic paints (brown, gray and green) my son went to town painting the sides. As an added touch, he found plastic spiders and bugs in his toy box, which we glued to the outside of the coffin.
Parents Part
After everything was dry, I took the fabric along with my handy-dandy hot glue gun and glued the fabric inside the coffin leaving approximately a 4 inch over hang at sides. This was so I could fold the fabric over the corrugated edges around the top of the coffin. IDIOT WARNING: THE GLUE IS HOT AND WILL SEEP THROUGH THE FABRIC AND BURN THE CRAP OUT OF YOU! SO BE CAREFUL!
Halloween night, I placed a black tarp over a picnic table bench for the coffin to rest on. It work great and guess what…I was able to use it in 2008 and 2009 as well.
