Skull Spears (2010)
This is a very easy weekend project (I completed this over a 3 day holiday weekend). I had extra PVC pipe laying around the garage and was inspired by my son pretending the pipes were spears throwing them at attacking enemies coming up the driveway. So with that said, I give you super cheap rotting skulls on spears.
Items I used for this project:
3 pieces of scrap PVC pipe @ 36″ each
1 can Great Stuff Foam (used about 3/4 of a can)
Scarp piece of card board
Approx. 1 yard of twine
Aluminum foil
40 hot glue sticks (for 4 skulls)
Various paints and stain I already had on hand

Using a skull I already owned as a template, I used the same technique for completing these hot glue skulls as seen HERE.
Once I had 4 skulls complete, I cut a slit on the top of the skull and slide the skull down the PVC pipe. Using my hot glue gun, I secured skull in place. Next I added great stuff foam in the skull opening and down the PVC pipe as seen below:

While foam was drying I started on the spear tips. Using a scrap piece of card board, I traced and cut out a basic arrow shape. Next I glued two arrow cutouts together and coated in hot glue. The glue will act as an added weather barrier.

After the arrow tip was glued in place, I added twine around the lower portion of the arrow and painted as seen below:

I added a base coat of tan paint to the skull and brown paint to the spear. Below you will see the before and after base paint on the spear and skull.

After the base paint was dry, I dry brushed black and white over the entire skull. Next I added 2 different colors of wood stain for the rotting flesh look (dabbing excess off with a paper towel). Lastly I added red paint and dabbed black over the bloody spine portion of the skull.

Below are several pictures of the completed skulls drying in the back yard. Can’t wait to get these out in the yard this Halloween.

Hope this inspires you to make a few of your own.
Happy Hauntings
