Spider Egg Sac (2010)

Since I set-up a spider victim scene in my bay window every year (seen HERE); I decided in 2009 that I needed to add a bit more spider creep factor in 2010. This will be accomplished by adding two lighted spider egg sacs hanging on each side of my spider victim. I have seen several awesome spider sac props over the years and figured I’d try my hand at it.

This is my version of a cheap lighted spider egg sac.

Supplies

  • Cheese Cloth 1.5 sq yards ($1.00 craft store)
  • Mini white lights ($1.99 craft store)
  • 1 Ballon
  • Bungie Cord
  • Glue (elmers will work BEST for this project, although I mixed 2 glues together for this project)
  • Stretch spider web
  • Pack of 100 spiders (clearance after Halloween 2009 $2.50)

 supplies

Blow-up your balloon and attach to the end of the bungie cord.

Using a small amount (no more than 1/2 cup) of water in a bucket, I soaked the cheese cloth with glue. The water helps ensure glue penetrates colth and keeps my hands from sticking while smoothing the cheese cloth onto the balloon.

I started off attaching one corner of the cheese cloth around the nail to make loop in the fabric for hanging the sac once completely dry.

I continued to wrap the glue soaked cheese cloth around the bungie cord and balloon.

drying

Don’t be afraid to add extra glue right on your finger tips and smooth over seams. I added a pretty thick layer as seen below:

Let dry over night.

Next day after completely dry. I cut a slit down the bungie cord and pulled stiff fabric apart.

Popped the balloon and pulled entire bungie cord from sac. Sac is stiff enough to add lights and glue spiders on.

The dried cheese cloth maintains the shape of the bungie cord and balloon.

Now onto the lights: Run mini string of lights down the inside of sac leaving bulk of lights inside the ball.

Add a bead of hot glue down one side and seal closed around the string of lights.

Once all lights were sealed in side sac, I added a thin layer of stretch spider webbing around the sac and approximately 100 mini plastic spiders were added.

My daughter is going to kill me for posting this one…but she was having a little fun with the new prop hanging in the garage…. and you really did need an overall size reference :)

Below is a mini video of the Spider Egg Sac with all lights out! Can’t wait to have them both in the bay window this Halloween. Hope this helps inspire you to make your own wicked scary lighted spider sacs.
