Cauldron

After making Helga the Witch, I decided I needed to come up with a quick cauldron for her. I did try to find one at the store; however, there was nothing large enough that would work for her.  After consulting my Haunt friends – I started making Helga’s cauldron using left over chicken wire from my Warning Stone prop. Even though it didn’t come out exactly how I pictured, it did work for 2008.

I formed chicken wire in a round cauldron shape. I purposely wanted the top to be a smaller diameter than the bottom (for an old world caludron look).  After the form was complete; I wrapped duct tape around the sides to help hold the shape, while I was applying the paper mache.

messI added 3  4-inch feet after the cauldron was dry. I luckily found a thick cardboard tube being trashed at work for this task. Although not clear in below picture, I used duck tape to secure feet to the bottom of cauldron and then paper mached over that (for added support).

I added additional chicken wire in the center of the cauldron to create a raised inner structure that my lights could rest on.  I added creepy cloth dipped in Elmers glue over the top (as seen in below photo) and draped it over the sides.  NOTE: During the Halloween Season you can find this cloth at the DollarTree for a dollar.

I glued foam skulls around the top edge for added decor as well as bones to the side of the cauldron.

After everything was dry I went back and added 2 coats of DRYLOK Masonry Waterproofer.

I added black and green latex paint to give it a bit of an aged appearance (seen in photo below). Finally, I placed  green lights in the center and placed spider web on top of lights. This way when the lights are on the web appears to be the bubbling brew.
